What is a Bernedoodle?

Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle

Bernese Mountain Dogs are known for their good and affectionate nature and overall calmness.  Their large stature equates to a dog that is big and powerful and is built for hard work.  They are strikingly beautiful and blessed with 3 vibrant tricolors, black, white and copper tan, with a coat that is thick and silky. Distinctive markings, make up a majestic appearance overall.

The Poodle is an active, athletic breed with the different breed varieties varying predominantly by their size.  Poodles are known as a highly intelligent, energetic, and sociable breed. They require both physical and intellectual activities. A typical Poodle is reserved and a little aloof with strangers upon first introduction, but after a while slowly reveal a warm and personable disposition once the dog realizes the new person is trustworthy and means no harm.

When bred together the Bernedoodle is created.  Overall, the temperament of the Bernedoodle is playful and affectionate. They interact well with children and generally love to spend lots of time with their human families. Because they need to be in close and consistent proximity with their human families, you will find that they don’t do well when left alone for long periods of time. Bernedoodles make great family dogs because they are friendly and easy to socialize. A lot of intelligence is passed on from the Poodle parent, which allows the Bernedoodle to be able to work as a therapy dog, with the proper training. Bernedoodles are a highly desirable breed due to the hypoallergenic properties of their coats.  Although, no dog is completely hypoallergenic, the coat that is passed down from the poodle is nice for many allergy sufferers.   Bernedoodle coats are typically wavy and curly, which results in very minimal shedding.

Bernedoodle sizes

Mini, Medium and Standard

Bernedoodles come in different sizes.  Generally, the size poodle the Bernese is paired with is used to describe the bernedoodle size.  For example, if a mini poodle sires the litter they are referred to as mini bernedoodles.  When breeding doodles, especially the first few generations, it is hard to accurately predict the size of the puppies.  General ranges can be offered but sometimes a puppy will genetically take after one size parent more than the other.  Therefore, we will always give you our best guestimate and tell you the weights of both parents.  We do not guarantee sizing.

Mini:  Mini Bernedoodles are normally between 30-45lbs for F1 and 20-30 lbs for F1B.  A mini F1 is a Bernese bred to a mini poodle.  A mini F1B, for us at Brookside Doodles, is an F1 Bernedoodle bred to a mini poodle.

Medium:  A medium is generally between 45-70 lbs.  A medium Bernedoodle is a Bernese bred to a moyen poodle or a small standard.  It is not quite the size of a standard Bernedoodle and not as small as a mini.

Standard: Estimated to be in the range of 70-100 lbs.  A standard Bernedoodle is a Standard Poodle bred to a Bernese.

There are other doodle generations to achieve these sizes.  These are the most common for us.

Coat Colors

Beautiful wide variety

Bernedoodles can come in many different coat colors just like poodles.  It is all about the genetics of the parents and what their genetics produce when paired together.  Achieving certain coat colors takes planning and research.  We breed for the beautiful copper tan points that make the Bernese so striking.  Our focus is traditional tri's, phantom, merle tri's, phantom merles and beautiful red abstract.  We occasionally will have other colors if we choose a stud outside our program that carries different genetics.

Tri color:  The traditional Bernese coloring.  Tri's have a white blaze up their forehead and white chest.

Phantom Tri:  Dominantly black and tan with minimal white.  No blaze up the forehead.

Merle Tri: Very similar to a traditional tri however the black color is merle.  Also referred to as Phantom Merle Parti.

Phantom Merle: Predominately beautiful merle color with copper tan points and minimal white.

Red Abstract:  Red with minimal white on body.

Bernedoodles do come in more color variations, but these are the most common we aim to produce.

Bernedoodle Generation

What generation is best for you?

When you first start researching doodles it can be very confusing all the F this and F that.  I hope to shed a little light on it and make it easier to understand.

F1:  An F1 is a first-generation doodle.  It is two different purebred dogs bred together.  With doodles one is always a poodle.  For Bernedoodles it is a pure-bred Bernese Mountain Dog bred to a pure-bred poodle.  F1's can come in different sizes depending on the poodle used.  With F1 generation you get one copy of the Furnishing gene from the poodle and one copy of the incomplete gene from the Bernese.  The furnished gene is dominant so that is why F1's have the doodle fluff.  F1's can have wavy and curly coats and can lightly shed.  Our personal experience is our F1's have very minimal to no shedding.

F1B:  An F1B is a second-generation doodle.  It is a F1 bred back to one of the original pure-bred breeds.  Most commonly F1B's are bred back to a poodle to increase the furnishings and low shedding.  75/25 Poodle/Bernese

F2:  An F2 is when two F1 dogs are bred together.  In F2 litters you will get some puppies who inherit two copies of the incomplete gene from the Bernese side.  These puppies will be unfurnished and their coat appearance will be similar to a Bernese instead of the fluff commonly associated with a doodle.  *we do not breed F2's at Brookside Doodles.

There are many other generations in doodles but at Brookside Doodles we are focusing on F1 and F1b's.
