Guardian Homes

What is a Guardian Home?

At Brookside Doodles our dogs are our priority.  We believe all dogs deserve a loving home where they are a pet and member of the family before anything else.  We know that having too many dogs doesn't allow the dogs to get the level of love and attention they deserve.  Therefore we created our guardian program.  On occasion we have dogs we look for guardian homes for.  We give the puppy/dog to the family at no cost with a signed contract detailing out the parameters of the guardian agreement.  Guardian families are a great way to have a pick of the litter amazing puppy or dog join your family if purchasing one is not an option for you.  We offer dogs to guardian families because we want our dogs to have loving families for life even after retiring from our breeding program.  For females we do not breed them until their second heat cycle.  Males are able to be bred sooner depending on when their bodies mature.  Females are brought to our home to deliver and raise their puppies for approximately 7-8 weeks.  We breed the females a predetermined number of times and then spay at our cost.  Once they are spayed the female is signed over completely to the guardian family.  Males stay in our program a little longer and normally are only picked up from their guardian homes to breed for the day.  Rarely are over night stays required.  The guardian program isn't for everyone.  Some people do not want to have an unaltered dog in their home.  Some families it is too hard to have their dog leave for approximately 8 weeks every time they have puppies.  For all these reasons an in-depth interview is required to determine if a guardian dog is a good fit for everyone in your family.

What are the requirements of a guardian family?

  • Live within 30 minutes for males and 1 hour for females of Murrieta, Ca. and not move out of the area while the dog is in the program.  If a family has to move then the dog is to be returned to Brookside Doodles.  Once the dog has been retired it is free to live outside the area.

  • Either own your home or have landlord approval to own a dog.

  • Have physical fencing to provide a safe and secure environment for the dog.  This also protects the dog from any unplanned, unwanted pregnancies and is crucial.

  • Never leave the dog off leash in an unsecured area.  NO dog parks or dog beaches are allowed!

  • Have reliable transportation and willingness to bring the dog to us when needed throughout the year for breeding purposes (ie testing, breeding, litters, etc.).  Vet care to be done by a mutually agreed upon vet.

  • Keep the dog on a mutually agreed upon food.

  • Guardian family is responsible for all cost pertaining to the dog.  Such cost are food, vet care, grooming, training and anything else that comes up. Guarding home is require to have pet insurance on the dog while in the program.   Breeder is responsible for any vet bills associated with the breeding of the dog.
